Variety is the Spice of Life
And oh boy do we want our game to be spicy!
This week in Deity's Form's development cycle we're working on getting rid of the last of our placeholder sprites, code and levels to get things a bit closer to our final vision of our game. The Art team has designed some beautiful looking sprites for the projectiles, one for each of the player forms, enemy bosses and a new and improved one for the standard enemies. To compliment these, the Programming team has been changing up the Bosses somewhat in between squashing bugs, working on giving each of them a unique attack to give them a big more presence as bosses. We'd felt that they lacked presence in a lot of ways and no small part of that was cause by how alike they all were. No more! Continuing on this runaway train of thought, the Design team has continued to add in the last floors of our Dungeon, each one having its own unique environmental effect for the player to discover and exploit to assist in their escape!
But what is a game if no one can figure out how to play it? That's right! We're back talking about the Tutorial again. From watching playtests of the game, especially the Tutorial, we've realized that it does a very poor job of introducing gameplay elements and reinforcing them to the Player. It's also weighed down with a lot of text that can be a bit of a pacing-killer. Part of the cause of that was our attempts to make the tutorial short and sweet, which made it anything but simple as we tried to cram in a full tutorial's worth of info in a single encounter. So, what we're going to do is stretch it out a bit, making the tutorial properly part of the game, presenting the information in a much more user friendly way that should be easier to learn and remember. It will be far longer but still skippable as we're aware that there's nothing worse than having to learn how to catch a Pokémon for the 800th time. Oh, look at me punching 10 weight classes above my own again.
Want more details about Deity's Form or the behind the scenes of development? Well should you wish to wonder no longer, we've set up a public Discord Server for any and all to join. We hope to see you there!
