Fantastic Fx and How you can hear them

Game Development sounds fun, right?

Well it is.

A big part of development that we've been neglecting to cover in these Devlogs has been Sound. (See what we did there? ) Well that's changing today. Our Audio Team has been hard at working creating some music tracks and sound effects for the Vertical Slice that we're going to showcase in the coming weeks. For the overall sound design for this game we wanted to immerse the player as much as possible into the environment. Bringing Middle Eastern and North African influences into the music we want to build that connection with the protagonist’s identity and the environment around you. Our main aim for the sound effects is to give clear information back to the player through audio cues. Keeping the sounds more grounded over the magical sounds more commonly seen is this area.

The game’s soundtrack will feature music in an orchestral soundfont using strings and heavy percussion, with choir used in places to increase intensity. There will also be Middle-Eastern influences in the music, including use of the Phrygian Dominant scale, a scale commonly used in Egyptian and Arabic music. The music will also possibly be used in combat to communicate enemy attacks dynamically through instrumental cues such as a cymbal crash or choir, however this depends on ease of implementation. The menu music will need to be a calmer version of the in game music, allowing there to be a smooth transition between the two while also clearly communicating the action to come. This will be done through the use of sparser instrumentation and a slower tempo, but with similarities in melody.

To check in with the other Teams, we're hard at work implementing a few power-ups for the Player to unlock as they clear a dungeon,  creating the animations for the player sprite and designing a few layouts for dungeon rooms. Progress is going well and we're managing to keep on schedule!
